CAF Awards: Salah wins, Oshoala misses out as Super Falcons reign again

">

Mohamed Salah has been crowned the CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second time, beating Sadio Mane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the coveted prize.

The Egyptian forward, who plays for Liverpool FC of England, was handed the award at the Aiteo CAF Awards ceremony in Dakar, Sengal on Tuesday night.

Salah had made history last year becoming the first Egyptian to win the title since the inception of the awards in 1992, but now joins the elite league of players to win the honour back-to-back.

Senegalese El Hadji Diouf (2001, 2002), Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon (2003, 2004) and Toure (2011, 2012) are the only other three to have won successive titles.

In the women’s category, Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala missed out on the opportunity to win a fourth title, as Chrestinah Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa beat her and Francisca Ordega to the African Women’s Player of the Year award.

However, the Nigeria women’s national team, Super Falcons, won the Women’s National team of the Year award for a record fourth time.

The Falcons have claimed the prize in 2010, in 2014, in 2016 and now in 2018, having won the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations a record nine times.

Nigeria’s Wilfred Ndidi also missed out in the Youth player category as Achraf Hakimi of Morocco was named African Youth Player of the Year 2018.

Coach Hervé Renard of Morocco defeated Aliou Cissé and Moïne Chaâbani to win the Men’s Coach of the Year 2018.

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis was named African Women’s Coach of the Year 2018, as Nigeria’s Thomas Dennerby missed out.

Mauritania, who qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the very first time, were named the Men’s Team of the Year 2018.

Mr. Fouzi Lekjaa was presented with the Tessema Award.

MC Oluomo: Police speak on violence at APC rally, declare Mustapha ‘Seigo’ Adekunle wanted

Lagos State Police Command has declared Mustapha Adekunle, aka Seigo, wanted for attempting to disrupt the APC rally held at Skypower Ground, Ikeja, on Tuesday.

Seigo, an NURTW chieftain, was said to have attended the rally with his supporters.

However, at the tail end of the event, Seigo and his group, the Police said, violently engaged other supporters of the party.

In the ensuing melee, one MC Oluomo, another NURTW chieftain, was stabbed and was rushed to EKO Hospital where he is currently recuperating, while two other victims of the attack were taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

“The crisis was quickly contained by policemen at the venue”, CSP Chike Oti, Police Public Relations Officer, said in a statement Monday night.

“It will be recalled that a few hours before the rally started, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, held a meeting with the leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW ), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and other affiliate groups where all the parties agreed to eschew violence before, during and after the electioneering.

“It was therefore surprising that a prominent member of NURTW would attempt to violently disrupt a peaceful political rally.

“In view of the development, the Command wishes to encourage members of the public with useful information on the whereabouts of Mustapha Adekunle popularly known as Seigo to report such at a nearest police station.

“Meanwhile, two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.”

MC Oluomo Stabbed In The Neck At Lagos APC Governorship Rally

MC Oluomo was reportedly stabbed in the neck at the Lagos APC Governorship rally, which held today at Skypower Ground Ikeja.

The NURTW Boss and alleged Oshodi street lord, had shared photos of himself preparing for the rally before the incident. He wrote on Instagram;

However few hours after the post, MC Oluomo was stabbed in the neck and reportedly rushed to the hospital where he is said to be in a critical condition. While the identity of the hoodlums who stabbed him is yet to be ascertained, however his camp claims Oluomo’s attackers could be men of the Kunle Poly’s faction of the NURTW.

The stabbed NURTW boss who was beside Sego and another prominent member of the union when the incident occurred, was rushed to the hospital by the National chairman of the union, Tajudeen Agbede and others.

Man City ends Liverpool's unbeaten run

Leroy Sanes 72nd-minute strike proved decisive as Manchester City reinvigorated their title defence and ended Liverpools unbeaten Premier League run with a crucial 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium.

Roberto Firmino looked to have sealed a potentially vital point for leaders Liverpool in the title race when he equalised just past the hour, but Sane struck soon after, confirming the Reds first league defeat of the season in their 21st game and moving City to second and within four points of the summit.

Liverpool were mightily unlucky not to take an early lead when a defensive mix-up between John Stones and Ederson followed Sadio Mane hitting the post, but they survived and finished the first half well – Sergio Aguero netting in ruthless fashion.

Firmino restored parity in the 64th minute and City initially looked rattled, as if they could see the Premier League trophy moving out of sight, until Sane found the bottom-right corner to breathe life into their challenge once again.

A lively City start faded and they had a lucky escape in the 17th minute. Mohamed Salah released Mane into the box and the Senegal forward hit the post before Stones blasted his clearance against Ederson and hastily scrambled to clear off the line.

Vincent Kompany was fortunate to avoid being sent off for a wild lunge on Salah 14 minutes later and City capitalised on that let-off just before the break.

Bernardo Silva played a low cross from the left towards the near post, where Aguero nipped in front of Dejan Lovren and emphatically smashed past Alisson from a seemingly impossible angle.

Liverpool hit back 26 minutes from time, however, as Andrew Robertson latched on to a lofted pass and played a volleyed cross for Firmino to bury with a stooping header.

But City were not done.

They caught Liverpool on the break and Sane found the net via the right post after being played into the box by Raheem Sterling.

A Liverpool onslaught followed, with Ederson tipping a Salah effort wide, before Bernardo Silva and Sterling missed glorious chances to finish the Reds off – luckily for them, no fightback came and the champions held on.

What does it mean? Aguero vital on the big occasion…again

It is difficult to be surprised by Aguero these days, given how impressive he has been at this level for so many years, but his goal on Thursday was his 37th against the big six in the Premier League since 2011-12. Harry Kane is closest to him with 21 goals. There really is no one else like him in England in terms of effectiveness in the big games. The win also gives City much-needed momentum and halts the relentless charge of Liverpool, who would have gone nine points clear of Tottenham and 10 ahead of City with a win.

Sane the spark to reignite Citys hopes

While his goal was undoubtedly a highlight, for its quality and importance, Sane also deserves praise for his general performance as he was a constant outlet on the left and caused Trent Alexander-Arnold plenty of issues.

Lovren targeted

It was plain to see for much of the match that Lovren was identified by City as Liverpools weak link. He picked up an early yellow card and was then caught on his heels by Aguero for his goal. In a game of this magnitude, there is not much coming back from that.

Key Opta Facts:

- Man City ended Liverpools unbeaten Premier League start to the season in the 21st match - only Arsenal in 2003-04 (38 games), Man Utd in 2010-11 (24) and Man City in 2017-18 (22) have had longer unbeaten starts to a Premier League season.

- This was only Man Citys second win in their last 12 matches against Liverpool in all competitions (D3 L7), winning at the Etihad in the Premier League in each of the last two seasons.

- Since the start of the 2011-12 season, Sergio Aguero has scored 37 Premier League goals for Man City in meetings between big six clubs – 16 more than any other player.

- Liverpool have lost 10 of their 25 matches in all competitions under Jurgen Klopp in the month of January (W8 D7), making up 29 per cent of his total defeats as Reds boss (10 of 35).

- Aguero has scored in all seven of his Premier League appearances for Manchester City against Liverpool at the Etihad, scoring one goal in each game.

- Liverpool conceded more than once in a Premier League game for the first time since drawing 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion in April.

- Man City won a Premier League match against a team starting the day top of the table for the first time since winning 2-1 against Liverpool in December 2013.

Whats next?

City have FA Cup and EFL Cup ties with Rotherham United and Burton Albion, respectively, coming up over the next six days, before returning to league action at home to Wolves on January 14. Nuno Espirito Santos men are the Reds next opponents on Monday in the FA Cup, before travelling to Brighton and Hove Albion five days later.

“Why Did My Ex Break Up With Me?” — The REAL Truth Your Ex Is Hiding

Have you been wondering WHY your ex broke up with you?

Like, what was the REAL reason?

That’s a question that almost everyone asks themselves after they’ve been dumped… it’s only natural.

You want to know so that you can FIX those things, and hopefully get back together…

Or maybe you’re more in the “seeking closure so I can move on” mindset.

I’m going to tell you the REAL answer… the TRUE reason for your breakup that your ex will NEVER tell you about.

First, there’s a couple of crucial facts I need to share with you. The last of these facts is absolutely CRITICAL and something most people never even consider…

FACT #1: Your Ex Lied To You, or Hid Part of The Truth.

Exes lie.

In fact, I’d even go so far as to say that this is pretty much universal. Your ex is just NOT going to tell you the full truth about why they decided to break up with you.

your ex had a secret affair

Sometimes that means your ex will tell you a half-truth and withhold the full story, but often it will just be a flat-out lie.

Regardless, it’s safe to say that if your ex DID say anything about their reasoning behind the breakup, you can’t assume that’s the only reason, or the REAL reason.

There’s 2 reasons for this:

Your ex wanted to avoid hurting you by telling you the painful truth (like, for instance, they’re secretly leaving you for your best friend or because you’ve gained 140 pounds in the past 3 months)

They just don’t want to get into another big fight or drawn-out, drama-filled discussion about it.

FACT #2: There’s No ‘Silver Bullet’ That You Can Fix To Make Your Ex Take You Back.

Look, I think you can probably figure this out on your own, but let me spell it out just in case:

There’s no one thing you can change or fix that will suddenly change your ex’s mind.

Even if a big reason they dumped you was because of something tangible and easily fixable — they hated your friends, for instance — simply making that issue disappear is almost never enough by itself to reverse a breakup and go back to a happy, loving couple again.

man grovelling on knees to woman

Bending over backwards for your ex is the complete opposite of what you should be doing if you want them back.

You don’t want your ex to think you’re so desperate and heartbroken that you’re willing to change for them.

Even if you miss your ex so badly you can hardly breathe, DO NOT try to tell your ex that you’ll change and things will be different if they’ll give you another chance. That will make matters much worse, trust me.

What does this mean for you?

It means that, generally speaking, learning the REAL reasons behind your ex’s decision to break up won’t really help you much if you want to win them back.

FACT #3: Getting “Closure” Is Not Really Going To Make You Feel Any Better

OK, if you’re not that interested in getting your ex back… or if you’ve basically given up trying… then maybe you just want some “closure” from your ex so that you can flip the page and start a new chapter in life.

Newsflash: it ain’t happening!

That closure doesn’t really exist, or at least not in the way you might think. Sometimes, hashing things out with an ex can maybe make you feel a bit better or help you learn how to do things differently in future relationships… but generally, the idea of “getting closure after a breakup” is a myth.

cowboy riding into sunset

And guess what happens when you sit down and talk things over with your ex? You start thinking about them again, and that brings up all of those memories and emotions…. If you’re trying to move on or even just push your ex out of our mind to numb the pain, getting “closure” will quite literally achieve the exact opposite.

OK, there’s one more fact I want to share, and this one is the most important one…. And the one that most people — including a lot of other so-called “breakup gurus” — really fail to understand or appreciate.

FACT #4: Even Your Ex Doesn’t Actually Know The Full Truth.

Yes, you heard me… in most cases, your ex won’t actually really fully know why they want to break up with you. Before you write me off as a lunatic here, let me explain, ok?

Humans are emotionally-driven creatures.

You might think you are in control of your feelings and behaviours, but you’re really driven by a series of chemical and hormonal changes in your brain… these hormones and neurons firing inside your head are what make you fall in love, feel betrayed, feel happy, feel heartbroken… it all boils down to chemical reactions inside the brain.

your ex is confused

Now, most of the time, that’s irrelevant. Who cares what the actual mechanism behind your heartache is, right?

It hurts regardless of what’s causing it, which hormones are out of balance, and all that science-y crap…

Except, wait a second… think about it… your ex is human, right? I’m assuming so.

And remember how I mentioned earlier that falling in love is actually the result of certain hormones in the brain?

Oxytocin is the main hormone, in fact, that’s responsible for feelings of love and affection…. And, back when your ex was crazy in love with you, in the ‘golden phase’ of your relationship… your ex’s brain was releasing a TON of oxytocin and other similar hormones like dopamine and serotonin.

And, when your ex started to fall out of love…. When they were no longer attracted to you in the same way as they used to be…. Their brain just wasn’t producing those hormones anymore. What were the triggers that led to this?

Was it stagnation and boredom, or was it really those 20 pounds you put on after you started dating? It’s likely a combination of many factors, and your ex won’t even know the true extent of the reasons.

Now, if you are trying to get back together with your ex… well, this is the part where I get to give you some great news:

You now have a fool-proof recipe for making them fall back in love with you!

If you can bring back the oxytocin and trigger those same hormones that led to them falling for you in the first place, the exact same thing is going to happen again… and there’s quite literally NOTHING they can do to stop it from happening.

brain chemicals

As I said, we’re all at the mercy of our brain chemistry, and nothing on this planet can stop your ex from feeling in love with you if their brain is flooded with oxytocin and all the chemicals that cause us to feel affection and attraction…

No rational, logical reason your ex could think up would ever be enough to overpower their fundamental brain chemistry.

In other words, it doesn’t matter what their reasons were for the breakup… if you can stimulate those love hormones like oxytocin, you’ll build real, organic attraction and your ex will fight to have you by their side, regardless of how many times they’ve told you “we’re never getting back together.”

Like I said, we’re all at the mercy of our hormones.

Forgive Your Lover

So, what special place does your lover has in your heart than every other person?

A part of your heart so sacred that you wouldn’t even want to share with anyone, right?

Bravo!

But do you mind me asking what special place you have for them when they offend you?

I bet you keep them in the lowest ebb wherein you keep every other person that ever offended you.

Do you desire a bravo on that? No!

Ideally, the path of forgiveness is a part of our daily voyage to an awesome life. To forgive is what we just have to learn to do, no matter what anyone would do to us.

Sometimes, we tend to be bent on not forgiving those who have done us wrong and, funny enough, we extend this act to our lovers too. To be frank, it’s not fair.

See this…

Lionel Messi has been one of the best ever in the history of football. He’s broken many records, got many medals and still relevant among his peers.

But….. He misses penalties which has one of the easiest spots for goal scoring.

Yaya Toure never misses a penalty, and yet he didn’t become the world’s best!

Messi has failed to score many goals too.

Today, many football lovers know how many goals he’s scored all his life!

But did you know…?

There is no record of how many goals he has missed in total!

So why do you keep records of your lover’s shortcomings when there are successes to focus on?

Why do you worry yourself too much over what your critics say about you?

Hey, get it off! Move one! Empty the bin! Shake it off!

Do you know why?

Every little act of unforgivingness you do will accumulate someday and help build your relationship to destruction. That’s no threat, my dear!

A request: Please forgive me. I mean, forgive your lover for whatsoever they’ve done, I plead.

No matter what they’ve done in the past, they can and will still be your best.

DRC: Kabila hints at running for presidency in future

A month before his scheduled departure after nearly two decades as Congo’s president, Joseph Kabila received a procession of foreign reporters at his heavily guarded riverside palace for a rare series of interviews.

If the timing suggested a valedictory, the 47-year-old leader’s words indicated otherwise. He vowed to remain in politics and, in one interview after another, left open the possibility of running again in 2023 when the clock resets on presidential term limits.

“My role will be to make sure that we don’t go back to square one, square one meaning where we found the Congo 22 years ago,” he told Reuters inside an ornate reception room with high ceilings and sweeping views of the churning Congo River.

“In politics, in life, you shouldn’t rule out anything,” he said when asked about a potential return. “There are still other chapters to write.”

In the 18 years since a youthful, clean-shaven Kabila succeeded his slain father, Laurent, the now bulked-up president sporting a billowy gray beard has traced an unlikely trajectory from accidental and apparently reluctant leader to the defining Congolese figure of his time.

Whether the vote due on Dec. 23 brings down the curtain on the tumultuous Kabila era, which began when Laurent seized power in 1997, or triggers a new phase in which Joseph becomes the power behind the throne of his preferred successor, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, remains unclear.

It depends in part on how the Congolese reflect on his rule.

There were early accomplishments - ending a regional war and holding the first open presidential elections - but also incessant conflict, lethal crackdowns on pro-democracy protesters and corruption that the government acknowledges siphoned off billions of dollars of potential revenue.

Foreign investment has propelled Democratic Republic of Congo to the status of Africa’s top copper producer and the world’s leading miner of cobalt, a crucial component of electric car batteries, but militia violence has persisted in the east.

Denis Mukwege, the Congolese doctor who shared this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, said Kabila had a right to remain in politics but hoped voters would remember his broken promises.

“None of the elements needed to install a real democracy have been made during his time in power,” he told Reuters.

PULLING THE STRINGS

Kabila’s critics and some analysts say concerns about his personal security – his assassinated father’s mausoleum stands below the presidential palace - and the fortune reportedly amassed by his family could account for a seeming reluctance to cede power.

A report last year by a research group at New York University found his family’s businesses are likely worth tens of millions of dollars. Kabila has called such reports “stupidity”.

He did not specifically respond to a Reuters investigatihere that showed nearly a third of the purchase price of Congolese passports goes to a company in the United Arab Emirates whose owner is believed to be a close relative of the president.

Even if Shadary, a former interior minister who many analysts say was chosen for his loyalty and lack of an independent political base, beats his two main rivals, Kabila has reason to worry about his ability to pull the strings.

He need only look next door to Angola, where President Joao Lourenco quickly marginalized Jose Eduardo dos Santos, his powerful predecessor who ruled for 38 years, by accusing family members of corruption.

“Kabila saw what happened in Angola. That’s why he chose the person who is the most loyal and, above all, the least threatening to his personal power,” said Manya Riche, who advised Kabila from 2008 to 2011.

Referring to an arrangement in which Vladimir Putin remained Russia’s dominant leader as prime minister until he could run for president again, she said: “This isn’t Russia. At a certain point here, it’s the chief who’s in the chair who is the chief.”

COMING TO POWER

Kabila was born in 1971 in eastern Congo in the bush headquarters of his father’s rebellion against long-time dictator Mobutu Sese Seko but spent most of his early years in neighboring Tanzania.

He returned to Congo to take part in Laurent’s Rwandan and Ugandan-backed successful march on the capital Kinshasa. A period of military training in China followed and Joseph was back as army chief when a bodyguard shot his father in 2001.

The country he inherited at 29 was in disarray, fragmented between government and rebel territories, with tens of thousands of people dying each month from conflict, hunger and disease.

A former U.S. official who met Kabila during his first trip to Washington that year described the shy, awkward leader as a “deer in the headlights”.

With his halting French and virtually non-existent Lingala - the language of the capital and the army - he struggled to connect with many Congolese. But his political instincts were surprisingly good.

He courted Western powers such as the United States and France, which his father’s anti-colonial rhetoric had alienated. He passed a liberalized mining code that attracted foreign investment. He revived a stalled peace process, leading to a 2003 power-sharing deal that kept him in the presidency even though rebels remained active in the east.

“He managed to run the country, more or less,” said Azarias Ruberwa, a rebel leader who joined the power-sharing administration and is now a government minister.

Kabila won both rounds of voting in elections held in 2006, which were generally viewed as fair, as well as the bouts of fighting that erupted after results were announced.

‘LESS TOLERANT’

Those victories, followed by another vote in 2011 marred by widespread allegations of fraud, led to changes in his leadership style, according to people close to him.

“The president became less tolerant of the West,” a former advisor said on condition of anonymity. “He saw them as imposing their ideas on him.”

After the death in 2012 of Augustin Katumba Mwanke, his closest advisor and confidant, Kabila moved more assertively to chart his own course.

Kabila rarely speaks in public and is driven by mistrust of almost everyone outside a tight circle of family that includes his twin sister, Jaynet, and younger brother, Zoe, people who have worked closely with him said.

Public frustration with his government mounted as economic growth fueled by copper production failed to deliver a semblance of infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest country, much of it covered by rainforest and only accessible by barge or motorcycle.

Kabila would occasionally tell collaborators he was frustrated by his inability to transform Congo into something more like other African countries he visited.

Although Kabila put most of the blame on the brutal legacy of former colonial power Belgium, Barnabe Kikaya Bin Karubi, a current advisor, said he sought to change “the Congolese mentality from people who like songs and dance and high life to people concentrated on hard work”.

STATE OF SIEGE

As the vote to replace Kabila at the end of his two official terms was repeatedly pushed back - officially due to conflict and logistical challenges - opponents accused him of seeking ways to cling to power and tried to organize protests.

Muted concerns from Western capitals over the flawed 2011 vote gave way to vocal criticism of alleged corruption and the killing of protesters.

Shadary is under European Union sanctions due to crackdowns by security forces. Deals with Israeli billionaire mining investor Dan Gertler, who American prosecutors say paid Congolese officials, including Kabila, more than $100 million in bribes, have received particular scrutiny. Kabila denies ever taking a bribe, and Gertler denies paying them.

Kabila left his options open for as long as he could. Shadary was nominated hours before the deadline to register candidates.

Whether it was Kabila’s intention all along to step down, as allies say, or it was a concession to domestic and international pressure, the president’s imminent departure thrusts him and his country into the unknown.

For now, Kabila appears serene.

“Look at my face. Do I look worried?” he told Reuters. “I am not worried.”
