What is the full form of AM and PM

AM: Anti Meridiem, PM: Post Meridiem

AM and PM both are Latin words, used in 12-hour clock system to represent Before Noon and After Noon. They are also represented as A.M. and P.M.

AM expand as Anti Meridiem which means "before midday" and PM expand as Post Meridiem which means "after midday".

They are used to differentiate the time in day and night in the 12-hour time zone. They divide the 24 hours of a day into two time zones lasting 12 hours each. The first 12-hour duration runs from midnight to noon and is designated by am. The second 12-hour duration runs from noon to midnight and designated by pm.

For example: If I say that I will come at 6 O'clock so it may be confusing that it is 6 O'clock morning or 6 O'clock evening. Thus, to remove this confusion, AM and Pm is used in 12-hour clock system.

AM: It represents time from midnight to noon. (12:00 AM to 11:59 AM). For example: If you say that you have to go college at 10 AM, it means 10 O'clock in the morning.

PM: It represents time from noon to just before midnight. (12 Pm to 11:59 PM). For example: If you say that you have to take dinner at 10 PM, it means 10 O'clock in the night.

Note: The terms 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. often cause confusion also they are not technically correct. So, it is advised to use 12 noon instead of 12pm and 12 midnight instead of 12 am. To avoid the confusion, the airlines and insurance companies use 12:01 am to mark the beginning of an event which begins with the day and 11:59 pm to mark the end of an event which ends with a day.

The 12-hour clock is a time convention in which the 24 hours of the day are divided into two periods:

A.M. (from the Latin, ante/anti meridiem, meaning before midday or Before Noon) and

P.M. (post meridiem, meaning past midday or After Noon).

The natural day- and night division of a calendar day forms the fundamental basis as to why each day is split into two cycles. One cycle which could be tracked by the position of the Sun (day) followed by second cycle which could be tracked by the Moon and stars (night). This would eventually evolve into the two 12-hour periods that started at midnight (a.m.) and noon (p.m.) which are used today. Noon itself is rarely abbreviated today, but if it is, it is denoted M.

Some countries, including the US, Canada, and Australia, use the 12-hour clock format including am and pm.

The abbreviations am and pm derive from Latin:

AM = Ante meridiem: Before noon

PM = Post meridiem: After noon

Using numbers from 1 to 12, followed by am or pm, the 12-hour clock system identifies all 24 hours of the day. For example, 5 am is early in the morning, and 5 pm is late in the afternoon; 1 am is one hour after midnight, while 11 pm is one hour before midnight.

These common Latin abbreviations signifying morning ( or forenoon) and afternoon expand into ante meridiem and post meridiem respectively; ante signifying before and post after. The word meridiem, the Accusative Case of meridies, signifies the middle of the day.
