A middle aged man kidnapped a set of male twin toddlers today at the Ekeki Motor Park area of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital. Reports said that the mother of the twins, Taiwo and Kehinde, Mrs Modupe Joseph, roasts corn along the road.
This afternoon, she went out to buy some things and left her five children in the care of her neighbor, one Aisha Ahmed and the kidnapper came to her sales point, pretending to buy corn. Funmi who is the twins older sister said the strange man gave her N200 to go and buy food for the twins.
Crying uncontrollably, Funmi said she refused collecting the money and told the man that they had already eaten back at home and that they weren’t hungry. After much pestering, she collected the money from the man and went to buy the food, leaving her brothers in the care of a total stranger. It was while she was away the man whisked the toddlers into his car and sped off.
“The man gave me N200 to buy food for my brothers but I told him that they have they eaten but he insisted, so I collected the money. Before I returned, he had carried my brothers away,” she said.
When questioned, Aisha whom Mrs Modupe had left her children with, said the kidnapper also succeeded in distracting her by giving her N1000 to also buy food for the children. According to her, the man said he needed change in lower Naira denominations.
“One man came to me and gave me N1,000 note to buy three plates of food for the children so that he could have change in his hand, but I asked him to bring the money so I would buy a recharge card for him to get change. While I went to get the recharge card, I saw the eldest among the children (Funmi) and I queried her for leaving the kids, but she told me that the man gave her N200 to buy food for the children. When we returned, we did not see the two boys. I don’t know what has happened to them.” Aisha said
The mother of the twins who wept uncontrollably, said ‘‘I left my children with my friend Aisha to buy salt at Tombia junction. Now they are telling me that my babies are nowhere to be found. If I don’t see my children, I will die.”
Confirming the incident, the state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Asinim Butswat, said the command has already commenced investigation into the matter and that the kidnapper will soon be arrested and the twins rescued safely.
Justice Muhammed Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, dismissed a no-case submission filed by a former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, in his bid to stop his trial over an alleged N3.2bn fraud.
Kalu alongside his former Commissioner for Finance and Account, Jones Udeogu, and a company, Slok Nigeria Limited, are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on an amended 39-count charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of N3.2bn.
The EFCC, through its counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, had, on Friday, May 11, 2018, closed its case against the defendants, after the conclusion of evidence given by a prosecution witness, Chidi Chukwuka , Deputy Director, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC.
During the May 11, 2018 proceedings, the prosecution counsel had also moved an oral application to amend the charge against the defendants in view of the evidence given so far. However, the defence led by Awa Kalu, SAN, had, on May 28, 2018, filed a no-case submission on behalf of their clients, which they subsequently adopted as their written address.
In his short ruling on the no case-submission today, Justice Idris held that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against the defendants based on the evidence against the defendants. The Judge also held that there was a link between Kalu and the two others.
“You have explanations to make,” the Judge said. Following the ruling, one of the defence counsel, Goddy Uche, SAN, informed the court that the lead counsel to the defendants, Awa Kalu, SAN, had written to notify the court that Kalu has an appointment to undergo a surgery abroad.
He, therefore, pleaded the court to adjourn the matter to September 10, 2018 to enable the first defendant, Kalu, to open his defence.

The Lagos State Government says nine bodies from the Otedola Link Bridge fire incident which occurred on June 28 have been successfully matched to the families.
The Commissioner for Health, Jide Idris, who confirmed the development, said that 11 families had shown up at Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, LSD&FC, for testing and only nine families had been matched.
“On July 5 2018, samples from the incident were picked up by LSD&FC staff from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Forensic Pathologist, under secured chain of custody,” said Mr Idris. Reference DNA profiles were generated at LSD&FC from representative family members and compared to the DNA profiles generated from the victims’ samples received from the Forensic Pathologist. Based on the DNA analysis performed at LSD&FC, all victim samples were successfully matched to relatives’ samples. Nine bodies have been successfully matched to nine families, out of the 11 families that showed up at LSD&FC.
They are now ready to be handed over to the rightful families for necessary burial arrangements.”
He said collection of the remains would commence from 10.00am July 28 at the Seminar Room of the Pathology & Forensic Medicine Department of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.
The commissioner said that this was the first time unidentified victims of a mass disaster had been successfully identified locally using DNA technology.
He said that the identification process was completed in less than four weeks after the incident as against over six months when the practice was to take samples abroad for analysis.
“I also wish to note that rigorous effort is made in ensuring that errors are reduced to the barest minimum in order not to compound the agony already being experienced by the bereaved families. As a government, we share the concerns and anxiety of the affected families and associates on the identification and the need for prompt release of the remains of their loved ones.
However we believe that the thorough investigation which was conducted is in the best interest of all concerned. We wish to reiterate that the entire cost of management and treatment of the surviving victims and DNA forensics for the dead and their families was borne by the State Government,” Mr Idris added.
He said that some of the victims of the accident are currently being treated at the Trauma & Burns Centre, Gbagada General Hospital and LASUTH and are responding to treatment.
Ten patients were admitted at the state’s various hospitals, two died, three have been discharged and five are still on admission.

Senator Dino Melaye in a long interview with Premium Times narrated his own version of what happened to him along the Abuja-Lokoja Highway which led to his disappearance for almost 24-hours.
The senator confirmed he was not abducted, but that he was not the architect of his ordeal either. He said he was travelling from Abuja to Lokoja for a court appearance on Thursday morning and shortly after passing Gwagwalada, which is roughly 50 kilometres southwest of Abuja, a convoy of three vehicles drove recklessly by his vehicle, intercepting him on the highway and forcing him to stop.
According to him, the assailants tried to open fire to force themselves into the vehicle, only to realize that it was a well-fortified vehicle with bullet-proof. Without much time to waste at the scene, the attackers devised an alternative.
“They started shouting that they wanted to burn me, they said ‘burn him, burn him down,’ and crossed the road to look for tyres to set the vehicle on fire,” Melaye said. As the attackers dispersed in different directions to scavenge for tyres, Melaye said he feared for his life and made instinctive calculation to jump into the bush and bolt, rather than remained in the car in defiance.
“I jumped into the bush, and I started running. They pursued me and I was able to outmanoeuvre them and climb a tree. I was on top of the three when I saw them run past looking frantically for me. When they didn’t find me, they also ran back” he said.
The senator said it was on the tree that he perched until his assailants left. While on the tree, he saw four of them passing, but remained hushed to avoid being detected. He would go on to spend 11 hours trying to ensure that he was no longer at immediate risk from his assailants and navigating his way out of the overgrown weeds.
He also said he could not identify any of them, even if there is an identification parade by authorities, largely because he was more apprehensive of his survival than anything else at that traumatic moment. The senator said he believed those who attempted to attack him were police-sponsored elements. He said when he appeared in court on Wednesday for his attempted suicide trial at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo, he saw some men trailing him after the proceeding.
He described the vehicles the men were driving as two Toyota Hilux trucks and a Toyota Sienna minivan. “They were exactly the same vehicle that were used to attack me on Thursday morning,” he said. He was driving to Lokoja in a vehicle not previously known with him, in a bid to disguise his move to those who were trailing him.
“I was going in a totally different vehicle, but I asked my brother to drive behind me in an SUV as a back-up. But I was shocked to see the attackers run into the middle, creating wall between my brother and I before attacking me” he said.
He added that “to begin with, the federal government and the police in particular have combined five cases against me in court. I have never declined to appear in court for trial in all the five separate cases”.
He said the claim that he was trying to avoid court appearance should immediately ring false to lucid minds, especially since he was in court just a day before. Besides, the court appearance in Lokoja was more about symbolism than substance. This was because he had learnt from his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, that the case would not be heard on Thursday because prosecution lead had already written to notify of his unavoidable absence and seek adjournment.
“Alex Izinyon is the prosecutor and he had written to my lawyer to inform him that he would not be in court on Thursday and that the judge should adjourn the matter. So why would I not want to be in court when I know that nothing would happen to me?” I have been attending all previous court hearings. I have been told that the prosecutor wanted an adjournment. I have been granted bail long ago which I continue to enjoy. So why would I not want to go to court that day? There is no sense in that claim. It is completely against logic,”Melaye said.
