Manchester City got off to a smooth start with a comfortable 2-0 win at Arsenal. Goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva gave City the perfect start to the new season as the blues dominated Unai Emery’s Gunners.
But how did City’s rivals do on the first weekend?
Friday night saw Manchester United in action as they laboured to an unimpressive 2-1 win over Leicester. Goals from Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw put the home side 2-0 up before Jamie Vardypulled a goal back for the visitors.
On Saturday, Chelsea took to the field at Huddersfield and recorded a 3-0 opening day win. Kante and City’s summer target Jorginho gave the Stanford Bridge side a 2-0 half time lead, and Pedro made it 3-0 with ten minutes remaining. Many regard Chelsea as City’s main challengers for the league title, but of course, no conclusions can be drawn at this stage of the season.
There were also three goals at St James’s Park as Newcastle entertained Spurs. All three were scored after 18 minutes as Spurs 8th minute lead by Vertonghen was cancelled out three minutes later by Joselu for Newcastle. But Spurs were not to be denied an opening day win when Dele Alli scored the winner on 18 minutes.
Watford met Brighton at Vicarage Road and inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the Seagulls. Pereya scored both goals either side of half-time to secure the points for the Hornets.
The New Boys
Cardiff returned to the Premier League after an absence of four years and lost 2-0 at Bournemouth. Ryan Fraser gave the Cherries a half time lead, but they had to wait until the 90thminute to seal the victory.
Big-spending Fulham also lost 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace. The visitors, who struggled to score at the start of last season took the lead four minutes before half-time, then doubled their lead with 11 minutes remaining.
Wolves and Everton played out a 2-2 draw, with the home side twice coming from behind to deny the Toffees and opening day victory.
On Sunday Liverpool, another team regarded as challengers to City’s title, cruised to a 4-0 home victory over Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham. Mohammed Salah continued from where he left off last season as the home side went 2-0 up by half time. The result sees the reds top of the table after one game.
In the final game on Sunday, Southampton and Burnley played out a goalless draw at St Mary’s.
In conclusion to the first weekend, City look smooth, sleek and polished. Liverpool look ruthless but can they do that against the bigger teams? Chelsea looked comfortable, while United look nervy.
