2 Dead, 3 Journalists Shot As APC Campaign Rally Turns Bloody In Ikeja
The official campaign rally organised for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikeja, Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was marred in violence as armed hoodlums engaged in free for all shooting.
Vanguard Newspaper reported that at least two persons have been feared dead, while several others, including journalists sustained different degree of injuries.
Nigerian Guardian also gathered that three journalists were shot at the rally, while a number of persons were also injured, robbed and beaten.
Trouble started at about 1:30 pm when Lagos governor, Akinwunmi Ambode was delivering his speech. Some suspected rival groups were said to have shot each other.
It was gathered that the hoodlums, said to be members of the National Union Road Transport Workers (NURTW), invaded the Skypower Ground Ikeja venue of the campaign with guns, daggers and other dangerous weapons.
Members of the party scampered for safety to avoid being hit by bullets being fired indiscriminately by the hoodlums, while security operatives tried to control the situation.
They took advantage of the occasion as they robbed people of their phones, money and bags.
An official of the NURTW, Musiliu Akinsanya also known as ‘Oluomo’ was beaten with sticks by thugs.
Despite the stampede caused by hoodlums and security men, Ambode continued his address and handed the microphone to the party candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu who delivered the vote of thanks.
